π Getting around β read first. Ireland drives on the left, with the steering wheel on the right (the opposite of the US). Rather than self-drive tired on narrow rural roads after golf and pub nights, this trip runs on pre-booked private transfers (a driver + vehicle) for the airport, the daily golf runs, and the leg between bases. For short hops around π Killarney β dinner and the pubs β you can walk (the hotel is central) or grab a taxi. Note that Uber in Ireland only dispatches licensed taxis (no private ride-share), and the FreeNow app is the local standard; both are fine in town but unreliable for early-morning or rural pickups, which is exactly why the golf legs are booked ahead.
Why this timing
You asked for the best golf weather, over a weekend β here's the case.
Ireland's links play best in late spring and early autumn. Early September is the sweet spot: firm, fast turf after the summer, days still long enough for a 9am tee and a leisurely round, the tourist crush thinned, and easier tee-time and lodging access than over the 4th of July. The week is built around a weekend: arrive Friday and play Saturday through Wednesday, so you get a Friday-night kickoff and full weekend golf. The one fixed rule is Ballybunion, which only takes visiting groups on weekdays β so it's slotted on the Monday. Lahinch and the weekend rounds are all bookable Sat/Sun.
Book now. September tee times and big-group beds get claimed 9β12 months out. Lahinch, Ballybunion and Doonbeg fill fastest, and all the clubs require full prepayment at booking. Locking dates is the first move.
Route map
Airport, golf courses, hotels and the ferry crossing β the whole loop at a glance.
The route
A clean north-to-south sweep β no backtracking β crossing the Shannon estuary by car ferry.
You'll base in two spots. First in Co. Clare at the 5-star π¨ Trump International, Doonbeg (~1 hr 15 from Shannon Airport, code SNN) β where you also play on Sunday β for the two Clare courses. Then hop the KillimerβTarbert car ferry (~20-min crossing, roughly hourly β saves an hour vs. driving around through Limerick) into Co. Kerry, basing in π Killarney β the region's nightlife hub β for the three Kerry links. β³ Waterville, the farthest point on the Ring of Kerry, is saved for last so you only make that run once. The group travels by pre-booked private transfers (a driver-led vehicle or two) for the golf runs and the leg between bases β no one has to drive on the left β with taxis or Uber for short hops around Killarney.
Quick geography. Ireland is divided into counties (a bit like states). This trip covers two: County Clare β the northern part near Shannon, home to β³ Lahinch & β³ Doonbeg β and County Kerry to the south, home to π Killarney, β³ Ballybunion, β³ Tralee & β³ Waterville. π Dingle is a lively harbor town on a peninsula in Kerry, famous for its pubs and distillery β it's the optional rest-day side trip, not one of the five golf days.
How the days flow
The daily rhythm: 9am tee β finish around 1:30pm β lunch at the clubhouse right off the course β afternoon free (nap, whiskey tour, explore) β dinner ~7:30pm β pubs & trad. Dinners are relaxed-but-refined β Bib Gourmand / top-rated spots, not stuffy Michelin β with the pubs saved for the pints and trad afterward. Each day below is listed in order, morning to night.
Day by day
Six nights, five rounds β every round a 9am tee. Names are colour-coded per the key above.
9am~20 min from the resort to tee off at β³ Lahinch Old Course (Old Tom Morris / MacKenzie) β quirky, dune-framed, the marquee Clare links. The club requires at least one caddie per group.
LunchAt the β³ Lahinch clubhouse Bar & Restaurant, straight off the round.
AfternoonAt leisure β the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are right nearby.
Sunday Β· Golf + transfer Β· Doonbeg β Killarney 9am tee
Doonbeg, then south to Kerry
9amTee off right at your hotel β β³ Trump International, Doonbeg (Greg Norman, in giant dunes); you're already on-site.Sunday is the weekend green fee (~β¬525 vs β¬425 midweek) β the small price of weekend golf.
LunchAt the β³ Doonbeg clubhouse after the round.
AfternoonDrive to the KillimerβTarbert ferry β cross into Kerry β check in at π¨ The Killarney Park, a polished 5-star right in π Killarney.
9amTee off at β³ Tralee Golf Club (~30 min from Killarney) β Arnold Palmer's first links design; a jaw-dropping cliff-and-dune back nine over the Atlantic.
Pick:π¨ Trump International, Doonbeg β 5-star Atlantic golf resort; you stay on-site and play its links Sunday, ~20 min to Lahinch. Minimal driving.
Castle alt:π¨ Dromoland Castle β iconic 5-star castle near Shannon, if you'd rather open the trip in a castle (~40 min to the courses).
Both are FΓ‘ilte Ireland 5-star.
Kerry β SunβWed Β· 5-star β
Pick:π¨ The Killarney Park β a polished, elegant 5-star right in town; warm service and walkable to every pub and restaurant.
All run golf packages and can hold a room block for a group.
Pubs, craic & whiskey
What's "trad"? Short for traditional Irish music β fiddle, tin whistle, bodhrΓ‘n (a hand-held drum), guitar and accordion, played live in pubs. Often it's an informal "session," where musicians just gather round a table and play. There's no cover charge and no stage β it's the heart of a proper Irish pub night, and exactly the fun, casual atmosphere you're after.
Per person, excluding transatlantic flights; shared costs assume 8β12 splitting. USD converted at ~β¬1 = $1.15 (approx. current rate) and will drift with the exchange rate.

Green fees and the 5-star lodging are the two biggest levers β a slightly lower-fee links (e.g. Dooks, Ballybunion Cashen) or a better lodging rate moves the total the most. Add ~$700β1,200 pp for round-trip flights to Shannon (SNN), depending how early you book.
Booking checklist
Lock the dates β a weekend-spanning window in early September 2027 (arrive Friday, golf SatβWed), with β³ Ballybunion on the Monday.
Book private transfers (a driver-led vehicle or two) for the airport, the daily golf runs and the base-to-base leg β note the KillimerβTarbert ferry crossing; taxis/Uber cover Killarney hops.
Book a couple of group dinner tables β the first Killarney night and the Waterville celebration night.
Confirm flights into π Shannon (SNN) with an arrival that lands the morning of Day 1.
Options & tweaks
Add a 6th round?β³ Adare Manor (host of the 2027 Ryder Cup, 40 min from Shannon) makes a spectacular final-morning round β but it's resident-only (you'd stay at the Manor) and parkland rather than links. β³ Old Head (clifftop, Kinsale) is pure spectacle but ~2.5 hrs off the loop, so it only works as a dedicated add-on with a Cork night.
